Welcoming remarks to the conference Buenos Aires 2012
Miroslav Vanek
As President of IOHA let me express how glad I am to have our next conference held in Buenos Aires, in Latin American continent where the explosion of oral history is remarkable. Latin American countries, and the organizing country, Argentina, are the ones which have been forming and directing the oral history movement in the World. To our community it is important to have the discussion held in a country that has experimented various political regimes, which can be positively reflected in several panels and round tables. As someone who has taken part in many of IOHA conferences I have met lots of colleagues from Argentina and I can assure that those meetings have inspired and enriched me, not only as a person but also professionally, and I have always felt extremely well in their company. I am certain that the friendly minds of argentinian people will also be transfered to the organization of next conference, that I will certanly be a success. As President of IOHA I will do my best to help the next conference go down in history of IOHA as a success, and to make it a milestone in the international community of oral historians as well.

As President of the Oral History Association of the Argentinian Republic (AHORA) and on behalf of its Excecutive Commettee, I would like to welcome the 17th. International Oral History Conference to be held in Buenos Aires. It is an great pleasure to receive colleagues from all over the world in a congress we are organizing with effort, knowing that it can be a tunrning point regarding the context in which it will take place. The concretion of such important event in South America is without any doubt a sign of how the region has grown in the field, and the setting up of a great number of associations and academic spaces that are into oral history in Latin America and that will surely be able to show their works and progresses in the International Conference. Besides, the carrying out of the IOHA Congress 2012 in Buenos Aires will permit many south american colleagues take part in the event for the first time because of the geographic proximity, and will consolidate the positive role of IOHA in the developement of oral history in South America. We hope to welcome everybody with open arms, sure that the congress will be an enviroment of fruitful exchange of experiences and salutary debates that will contribute to the growth of the historiographic discipline.Pablo Pozzi

I feel a great joy and proud to be a part of the host staff of 17 th International Congress of IOHA to be held un Buenos Aires. It was in this city where 30 years ago a was part of a small group of historians that started exploring oral history. At that time the field was new and frequently devalued by the academy. Many things have happened since then, in the world, in our country and in History and Social Ciences. Nowadays, methodology of Oral History has been included to the most rigorous researches all over the world, from East to West, in big cities or in small towns. And IOHA meetings have reflected that geographical and cultural diversity in distant places such as Brazil, South Africa, Turkey, Italy, Australia, Mexico, Czech Republic, and now, Argentina. On the other hand, the experience in Mexico in 2008 showed the progresses in Latin American oral history and, above all, iencouraged its practice in the region. We hope Buenos Aires to be the place to express that growth, where current debates come out and, once again, collective exchenges show its potential. We will offer the hospitality of our city and our organizational effort to achieve it.
